You've Been Glutened - Now What?

A question that comes up a lot is "How do I feel better after I've accidentally been glutened?"

I recommend that you save and refer back to this article if, and when you accidentally get glutened.

Now, if you read last week's article, we were talking about how to heal your body after you've been diagnosed with celiac disease.

Now, many of those tips definitely do help support you if you were accidentally glutened, but this is more so for later on. So if this was to happen to you, these are my top tips for you.

Now, first up is Rest.

This one almost goes without saying, because many of us that get glutened feel like we've been hit by a truck and we can't help but rest. There have been times in the past where I've accidentally been glutened and my husband has had to take time off work, not so much to look after me, but to look after our kids, because I was incapable of it. It's as though I have had the flu and gastro and, you know, pregnancy all rolled into one, but it was just that I'd accidentally had gluten. So I could not look after our children. He was home to look after them instead so that I could sleep it off and just rest. So definitely take time off work if you need to and take time off from study as well, just let your body take the time that it needs to rest and recuperate.

The next one is Rehydrate. This is super important. If you have any side effects like vomiting or diarrhea, it's very, very important to make sure you rehydrate. Also water will help flush out those toxins that you've now got in your body. I definitely recommend to you just plain old water and drink as much of it as you can stomach. Coconut water is fantastic for a rehydration as well.

I recommend that you have some warm peppermint tea or ginger tea, whichever one, you like the most, they should set off an upset stomach.

If you're new to being diagnosed with celiac disease, it's almost guaranteed that you're going to have some accidents and slip up every now and again, until you know exactly what you're doing, and get on track.

Chamomile is another great one for reducing inflammation. These are teas that I often drink. I drink peppermint tea most nights, and sometimes I'll have a chamomile tea . So it doesn't just have to be for when you accidentally get gluten. They're great to have at any time.

Let's talk about Easily Digestible Food. Sometimes it is the last thing you feel like doing is eating food. I recommended that you have something that's easy to digest and something that's really simple for you to consume and it's easy on your body. Bone broth is fantastic, or if you're not into bone broth, you could just have a very basic soup. And then once you feel better from there move on to some gluten free toast, just something quite plain, maybe some dairy free butter on there, nothing too fancy, and then move on to some plain rice, perhaps a banana and maybe some gluten free crackers. These are just very simple, very easy to digest foods.

Chewable ginger is also another one that's really great for nausea and an upset stomach. It is fantastic to have on hand.

Also during the healing period, I recommend that you avoid dairy and sugar because during this time your villi is really not in its best shape to digest these. This is why so many people, when they first get diagnosed with celiac disease can not stomach dairy. Maybe keep a food diary for a while and see how you feel if you're still consuming dairy. But once you've accidentally been glutened, please avoid dairy and sugar because you'll feel so much better from it.

All right , painkillers, this is a huge one. This is something that I can not believe that we don't get told. And we don't have much of an awareness about avoiding ibuprofen. So any painkillers that have got ibuprofen in it, we should not be taking ever as celiacs because it is too harsh on our stomach. It even says on many of the packages that you should not take with any stomach disorders. And I would definitely class celiac disease as a stomach disorder. So definitely be avoiding the ibuprofen. Many people report that they feel so much worse when they take it. So yeah, don't have it. It's not good for us. You're better off just taking paracetamol. And as I've mentioned in other episodes, please speak to your primary caregiver. Please speak to your doctor and do the best thing that is for you. But this is just my tips and my advice. But yeah, that, that's a big one because it can certainly make you feel pretty yucky having ibuprofen.

Then we move on to some Alternative Therapies. Now this is something I never even thought of until I went to my chiropractor. So my chiropractor is actually fantastic. She is also someone who has celiac disease. When I went to see her it was actually a couple of days after I'd been glutened, I'd already had an appointment and I told her how unwell I was. And she said, next time you get glutened book an appointment straight away, come in and see me. And I was like, wow , what's going on here? And after my adjustment, I felt so much better. It was just ridiculous. I can not believe the difference that I felt in my body after her readjusting me. Getting a chiropractic adjustment just worked wonders on me. So that is a massive tip that, you just, you don't really hear about too much, but it basically helps to move the toxins out of your body and even a really good deep tissue massage can help with that as well. So yeah, worth checking out guys. Definitely.

And then we move on to Supplements. So I talked about this last week, the many different supplements that are recommended for healing and many of those supplements I think are fantastic, ongoing as well, but when you get accidentally glutened, definitely a probiotic to help with your gut and help with healing and L glutamine to heal the gut lining and also to reduce inflammation. So they're fantastic to have on hand as well. And then moving on to something that you may not have ever thought of. And it's basically just essential oils. So there's four essential oils that I recommend. So, you know, just get your favorite brand or, you know, talk to some friends, family what they use. It doesn't really matter which brand you get, just, you know, get a good quality one. So definitely peppermint and ginger then lavender and fennel. So they are the top four. So peppermint, ginger, lavender, and fennel . I also use a digestive roller one that I rub on roll on my tummy when I just feel a little bit off. They're great for having in your little recovery kit as well.

I hope these tips help you and I hope you don't get gluten, but at least if you do, these are some really simple tips that can make a massive difference to how you feel.
